Fatal SUV Crash in Lenawee County Claims Two Lives

Fatal SUV Crash in Lenawee County Claims Two Lives after a sport utility vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree Sunday afternoon, according to the Michigan State Police. The tragic collision occurred around 2 p.m. on U.S. 12 near Wisner Highway in Franklin Township and resulted in the deaths of two Michigan residents.

Authorities reported that an 85-year-old man from Brooklyn, Michigan, was driving a Chevrolet Trax eastbound on U.S. 12 when the vehicle traveled off the road for reasons still under investigation. The SUV struck a tree with significant force. Emergency responders transported the driver to ProMedica Charles and Virginia Hickman Hospital in Adrian, where he was later pronounced dead.

A 77-year-old woman from Jackson, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity has not yet been released pending notification of family members. The sudden and violent nature of the crash left first responders managing a devastating scene along the busy highway.

Michigan State Police indicated that preliminary findings suggest the driver may have experienced a medical emergency before losing control of the vehicle. Investigators are continuing to review the circumstances surrounding the incident, including medical factors, roadway conditions, and whether any mechanical issues may have contributed.

Troopers from the MSP Monroe Post were assisted by the Jackson Post, the Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office, Lenawee Community Ambulance, Sand Lake Fire Department, and the Lenawee County Medical Examiner’s Office.

When fatal crashes occur, surviving family members are often left facing not only overwhelming grief, but also unexpected financial and legal challenges. In cases like this, the families of the victims may be entitled to pursue compensation through a wrongful death claim.

Compensation can include funeral and burial expenses, medical costs incurred before death, loss of financial support, loss of companionship, and the emotional pain and suffering experienced by surviving loved ones. Even when a medical emergency is suspected, a full investigation is essential to determine whether other parties—such as vehicle manufacturers, healthcare providers, or roadway authorities—may share responsibility.
