26-Year-Old Accused in Deadly Clinton Township DUI Crash

26-Year-Old Accused in Deadly Clinton Township DUI Crash — A young life was tragically lost following a multi-vehicle collision in Clinton Township, Michigan, that authorities say was caused by an impaired driver. According to court records, a 26-year-old Detroit man is now facing serious felony charges after the crash, which occurred Monday along Metropolitan Parkway near Groesbeck Highway.

Prosecutors allege that Torrance Irby was operating a Ram ProMaster van while intoxicated when he struck a Ford Mustang traveling on the roadway. The impact’s force pushed the Mustang into the rear of a Ford Transit Connect van, triggering a chain-reaction collision involving multiple vehicles. The driver of the Mustang, 27-year-old El Verson Mitchell of Ann Arbor, suffered critical injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died.

Court documents indicate that Irby left the scene on foot following the crash but was apprehended shortly afterward by law enforcement. He was formally arraigned Friday in Clinton Township and is charged with operating under the influence causing death, failure to stop at the scene of a serious personal injury accident, and a felony offense related to the use of a motor vehicle. A judge set Irby’s bond at $250,000 cash or surety, reflecting the gravity of the allegations.

Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido addressed the case in a public statement, emphasizing the preventable nature of impaired driving. He noted that operating a vehicle while under the influence puts everyone on the road at risk and, in this case, allegedly resulted in the loss of a young man’s life. The emotional and financial toll on the victim’s family, he said, is immeasurable. Irby’s next court appearance, a probable cause conference, is scheduled for January 12.

Compensation at Stake for the Victim’s Family

In fatal DUI crash cases, surviving family members may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim under Michigan law. Compensation can include funeral and burial expenses, medical costs incurred before death, loss of the victim’s financial support, and the loss of companionship, guidance, and emotional support.

In some cases, damages may also account for the pain and suffering experienced by the victim before passing. When impaired driving is involved, the legal stakes can be exceptionally high, and a thorough investigation is critical to identifying all available sources of compensation, including insurance coverage and potential third-party liability.
