Driver Hospitalized, Home Knocked Off Foundation After Teen Flees Police [Detroit, MI]

A driver is in the hospital and a homeowner was trapped inside his house after a 15-year-old operating a stolen pickup truck ran a red light and crashed into another vehicle and then into a home on Detroit’s west side early Sunday morning, April 19, 2026. The story was reported and published by ClickOnDetroit Local 4 News today, April 20, 2026.

According to Michigan State Police, a trooper spotted the stolen truck on Outer Drive near Schoolcraft Road around 5 a.m. and attempted to initiate a traffic stop. The 15-year-old driver refused to stop, ran a red light, and continued onto Evergreen Road. In accordance with MSP policy limiting pursuits to situations involving probable cause of a violent felony, the trooper did not give chase. Moments later, the trooper came upon the crash scene: the stolen truck had slammed into another vehicle, then careened into a nearby home and burst into flames.

The homeowner, Warren Scott, told reporters that the impact was so violent it knocked his house off its foundation and jammed his front door shut, trapping him inside while people outside were screaming. He was eventually able to get free. The driver of the struck vehicle was taken to a hospital. Authorities have not released an update on that person’s condition. The 15-year-old driver was also treated at a hospital for a minor head injury and later released to his mother, with charges referred to the Wayne County prosecutor’s office. The crash remains under investigation.

Understanding the Legal Implications of This Crash

When an innocent driver is injured because a teenage suspect in a stolen vehicle ran a red light and struck their car, the affected victim has significant legal rights — even when the at-fault driver is a minor. Under Michigan law, the victim of a crash caused by someone else’s reckless conduct is entitled to pursue compensation for their injuries, medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering. The fact that the at-fault driver is 15 years old does not eliminate civil liability. In Michigan, the parents or legal guardians of a minor can be held responsible for damages arising from their child’s negligent conduct in certain circumstances, and the owner of a stolen vehicle may also be a relevant party in the legal analysis depending on how the vehicle was taken.

The driver of the struck vehicle faces what can be a confusing legal landscape: Michigan’s no-fault insurance system will provide initial coverage for medical expenses and wage loss regardless of fault, but when injuries are serious — and a crash of this severity involving a vehicle that caught fire raises real concerns — additional compensation may be available through a liability claim. An experienced auto accident attorney can help identify every available avenue of recovery, including claims against the juvenile offender, his guardians, and any other parties whose conduct contributed to this crash.

For homeowner Warren Scott, whose house was knocked off its foundation by the impact, the legal questions are equally serious. Property damage of that magnitude, combined with the trauma of being trapped inside a home while a vehicle burned outside, may give rise to claims beyond a standard homeowner’s insurance claim. An attorney can help evaluate all available options. The investigation is ongoing, and both the hospitalized driver and the displaced homeowner deserve experienced legal support as the facts continue to develop. In situations like this, acting quickly to consult with an attorney helps preserve evidence, protect legal rights, and ensure that no avenue of compensation is overlooked.
