One Killed and Six Injured in St. Clair County Crash Involving Tractor-Trailer

One Killed and Six Injured in St. Clair County Crash after a devastating collision involving a car and a tractor-pulled trailer in Kimball Township, Michigan, on Saturday night. According to the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office, the tragic crash occurred just before 7:30 p.m. on Smiths Creek Road near Burns Road.

Authorities report that a 79-year-old man was operating a tractor towing a trailer carrying five passengers when a 44-year-old man driving a Buick Regal struck the trailer from behind. The impact was severe, causing the trailer’s passengers to be thrown and sustaining multiple injuries.

Among the victims, an 85-year-old woman from Kimball Township was rushed to a nearby hospital where, tragically, she succumbed to her injuries. The sheriff’s office confirmed that the remaining passengers — a 77-year-old woman from Kimball Township who sustained serious injuries, along with a 67-year-old woman from St. Clair Shores, a 62-year-old Kimball Township woman, and a 54-year-old Kimball Township man — were also hospitalized. The tractor’s driver remains in critical condition, while the driver of the Buick was treated for minor injuries.

Investigators believe the tractor may not have been equipped with proper rear lights or a slow-moving vehicle emblem at the time of the crash. Such safety features are vital for ensuring visibility during nighttime driving, and their absence could have contributed to the accident. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine whether negligence or other contributing factors played a role.

Legal Options and Compensation for Victims

When a tragic accident like this occurs, the victims and their families may be entitled to several forms of compensation. These can include medical expenses, funeral and burial costs, pain and suffering, lost wages, and emotional distress. Surviving victims who sustained injuries may also pursue claims for ongoing rehabilitation costs, long-term care, or disability compensation if their injuries lead to lasting impairments.

In fatal crashes, the family of the deceased can file a wrongful death claim, which seeks justice and financial relief for the loss of their loved one. Michigan law allows families to hold negligent parties accountable — including drivers, vehicle owners, or other responsible entities — if their actions or omissions led to preventable harm.
