Vehicle Crash Claims Life of 11-Year-Old
An 11-year-old boy tragically passed away after being hit by a car while crossing the street in Taylor on Tuesday afternoon, according to police.
The child was a sixth-grade student at Grandport Academy in Ecorse Public Schools. Described as bright and driven, Jacob was on the honor roll and an active member of the school’s leadership program—qualities that made him a source of pride for his family and teachers.
Details of the Incident
Taylor Police report that the crash occurred shortly before 6:30 p.m. near Eureka and Inkster roads. Jacob was transported to a nearby hospital, where he sadly succumbed to his injuries a short time later.
Jacob’s mother, Tonoya Robinson, shared that it was still daylight when her son left home to walk to a store across Eureka Road. The two had spoken on the phone just minutes before the crash.
“I heard ambulances, and I heard a lot of police cars. I just followed my right mind, and I went outside,” she said, recalling the terrifying moment she sensed something was wrong.
Authorities confirmed that the driver involved is cooperating fully with the investigation. At this time, police say drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors.
Roadway Safety Concerns
Investigators have acknowledged that the stretch of Eureka Road where the crash occurred presents particular dangers for both drivers and pedestrians.
“We do have several apartments across the street, and we do have dining establishments, stores, and fast food restaurants across the street, so people should walk down to Inkster Road and use the crosswalk there,” said Taylor Police Lt. Alex Stellini.
However, with apartments and businesses directly across from one another, pedestrians frequently attempt to cross the road outside designated crosswalks. Community leaders are now discussing potential safety improvements.
William Epps, vice president of McKinley Management, the company that owns nearby apartments, said measures such as installing a crosswalk or a blinking pedestrian signal may help prevent future tragedies. Meanwhile, Ecorse Public Schools is offering counseling services to staff and students as they mourn the loss of a young life taken far too soon.
Compensation That May Be Available to the Family
Beyond the emotional devastation, families facing the loss of a child in a pedestrian accident often encounter serious financial and legal challenges. Under Michigan wrongful death laws, certain surviving family members may be entitled to pursue compensation.
Potential damages may include funeral and burial expenses, medical bills incurred prior to the child’s passing, loss of companionship, and other economic and non-economic losses recognized by law. While no legal action can undo such a heartbreaking loss, pursuing compensation can help ease financial strain and hold negligent parties accountable.
