SUV Incident Leaves South Rockwood Woman Critically Hurt

SUV Incident Leaves South Rockwood Woman Critically Hurt after a late-night pedestrian-vehicle collision that remains under investigation in Monroe County, Michigan. Authorities say the incident occurred around 9:42 p.m. Wednesday on Helen Street near Barney Street in Berlin Township.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, a black 2025 GMC Canyon driven by 57-year-old Steven J. Villneff of Monroe was involved in the incident. Deputies reported that Audra R. Davis, a 33-year-old woman from South Rockwood, approached the driver’s side of the vehicle while it was stopped in the area. Investigators say she grabbed the door handle several times in an apparent attempt to get the driver’s attention.

Deputies indicated that Villneff did stop the vehicle and briefly spoke with Davis. After the brief interaction, he drove northeast on Helen Street. Shortly thereafter, Villneff reportedly noticed in his rearview mirror that Davis was sitting along the side of the roadway. Concerned, he stopped the vehicle and returned to the location.

Upon returning, Villneff discovered that Davis had been seriously injured. Deputies stated that he assisted her into the GMC Canyon and transported her to Corewell Health Trenton Hospital in Trenton for emergency medical treatment.

Investigators believe that as the driver pulled away from the initial stop, Davis fell to the ground and was run over by the vehicle. Sheriff’s officials noted that this sequence of events is still being examined as part of an active investigation. Davis was listed in critical condition as of Thursday morning, highlighting the severity of her injuries.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities are asking anyone who may have witnessed the collision or has relevant information to contact the Traffic Services Division at 734-240-7548 or Crime Stoppers of Michigan at 800-SPEAK-UP.
