Michigan child dies after being hit by SUV close to bus stop

Michigan child dies after being hit by SUV close to bus stop in a heartbreaking incident that occurred Thursday morning in Southwest Michigan. According to the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office, the young boy succumbed to his injuries after being struck near a school bus stop along 22nd Street in Porter Township. The tragedy unfolded at around 8:12 a.m., just as students were preparing for their school day.

Deputies report that a Mattawan Consolidated Schools bus was traveling north on 22nd Street and was preparing to stop for its morning pickup. At the same time, the 10-year-old boy had crossed the roadway after checking the family mailbox. As he moved back across the street toward the bus area, a sport utility vehicle traveling in the same vicinity struck him.

The driver of the SUV, a 38-year-old woman, immediately stopped and called 911 for help. Emergency responders from Lawton Quick Response, Van Buren EMS, and sheriff’s deputies arrived quickly and began life-saving efforts. The child was transported to Bronson Hospital, but despite the extensive medical care provided, he later died from his injuries. The Van Buren County Accident Reconstruction Team is now conducting a full investigation to determine all factors that contributed to the crash.

Incidents like this highlight the dangers children can face near bus stops and rural roadways, especially during busy morning hours. Even in low-traffic communities, visibility challenges, driver distraction, and timing can create tragic outcomes within seconds.Compensation at Stake for the Family

In a case involving a child’s death, the surviving family may be entitled to several forms of compensation under Michigan law. These may include coverage for medical expenses, funeral and burial costs, loss of companionship, emotional suffering, and in some cases, wrongful death damages if negligence contributed to the crash. Michigan’s no-fault system provides certain benefits, but when a fatality is involved, families may have the right to pursue additional claims beyond standard insurance coverage.

Wrongful death cases are emotionally heavy and legally complex, often requiring detailed investigations, expert analysis, and careful handling. Families are rarely prepared for the sudden financial and emotional strain such losses create. Securing fair compensation can help support long-term needs, counseling, and stability during an unimaginable time.
