Macomb County Man Charged After Wrong-Way I-94 Crash

A Macomb County man is facing charges after his alleged multi-day crime spree ended with a wrong-way crash on I-94, officials said.

Joel Masching, 53, of Clinton Township, has been charged following a series of incidents that began on January 11, 2026, according to the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office. Authorities allege the situation escalated over several days, culminating in a dangerous highway collision that placed innocent motorists at serious risk.

Alleged Assaults and Escalating Behavior

Prosecutors say Masching first assaulted a woman on January 11. Later that same day, he allegedly returned to her home, forced his way inside, and assaulted her again. Police were called to the scene, but Masching reportedly fled before officers arrived.

On January 16, the victim contacted police again, reporting that Masching had been repeatedly calling her and driving across her lawn. Warren police later located him near 10 Mile Road and Schoenherr and attempted a traffic stop. Authorities say Masching refused to comply and instead led officers on a high-speed chase.

High-Speed Pursuit and Wrong-Way Crash on I-94

Officers discontinued the pursuit near 9 Mile Road and I-94 due to public safety concerns. Two days later, on January 18, police located Masching again near 11 Mile Road and Schoenherr. When officers attempted to box in his vehicle, he allegedly drove the wrong way onto I-94, causing a serious crash.

Wrong-way crashes are among the most dangerous traffic incidents, often resulting in catastrophic injuries because drivers have little to no time to react.

Compensation at Stake for Crash Victims

Victims injured in a wrong-way crash may be entitled to several forms of compensation. This can include payment for medical bills, emergency treatment, hospitalization, rehabilitation, and future care needs. Compensation may also cover lost wages, diminished earning capacity, pain and suffering, emotional distress, and vehicle damage. In severe cases, families may pursue wrongful death damages for funeral costs, loss of companionship, and financial support.
