DUI Alleged in Fatal Macomb County Crash

DUI Alleged in Fatal Macomb County Crash has resulted in serious criminal charges after a Clinton Township collision claimed the life of a 27-year-old Ann Arbor man late last year.

According to prosecutors, the crash occurred on December 29, just after 8 p.m. on Metropolitan Parkway, east of Groesbeck Highway. Authorities allege that a Detroit man, identified as Torrance Irby, was intoxicated when he rear-ended a vehicle stopped at a traffic light. The impact reportedly pushed that car into the back of a van, causing a chain-reaction crash.

The Ann Arbor man, who was driving the rear-ended vehicle, was transported to a local hospital with severe injuries. Despite medical treatment, he later died as a result of those injuries. The incident has left family members grieving and highlights the irreversible consequences of impaired driving.

Charges Filed and Ongoing Investigation

Prosecutors allege that Irby fled the scene before first responders arrived. He was arrested later and charged with drunk driving, causing death, and failure to stop at the scene of a crash. Court records show he is currently being held on a $250,000 bond as the case moves forward.

Police continue to investigate the crash, and authorities are asking anyone with information to contact the Clinton Township Police Department at 586-493-7802.

Wrongful Death Claims and Compensation at Stake

Beyond the criminal charges, fatal DUI crashes often give rise to civil wrongful death claims. Families of victims may be entitled to compensation for funeral and burial expenses, medical costs incurred before death, and the loss of the victim’s future income and financial support. Michigan law also allows recovery for non-economic damages, such as the loss of companionship, care, and guidance the victim would have provided to loved ones.

In many cases, these claims are critical to helping families regain financial stability after an unexpected and tragic loss. Holding an impaired driver accountable through a civil case can also serve as an important step toward justice and closure.
