Driver Rescued After Semi-Truck Crash in Oakland County

Driver Rescued After Semi-Truck Crash in Oakland County. Authorities are investigating a two-vehicle collision that left an elderly motorist injured and trapped inside his car outside a Walmart in Commerce Township, Michigan.

The crash occurred at approximately 7:15 a.m. Tuesday along the 3000 block of Pontiac Trail, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies said a semi-truck was attempting to exit the Walmart parking lot and enter Pontiac Trail when a westbound Chevrolet Malibu collided with the rear portion of the truck’s trailer.

The impact caused significant damage to the passenger vehicle and left the 87-year-old driver pinned inside the wreckage. Emergency crews from the Commerce Township Fire Department quickly responded and worked to safely extricate the man from his vehicle. After being freed, he was transported to Henry Ford Providence Novi Hospital for medical evaluation. Authorities indicated his injuries were believed to be minor, though the full extent of his condition was still being assessed. The semi-truck driver was not hurt in the crash.

Investigators noted that the truck driver was issued a citation in connection with the incident. The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office continues to review the circumstances surrounding the collision, including vehicle positioning, visibility, and right-of-way as the commercial truck entered the roadway.

In a statement following the crash, the sheriff’s office reminded motorists to remain alert near commercial entrances and exits, particularly when large trucks are maneuvering into traffic. Due to their size and limited visibility, semi-trucks require extra caution from both commercial drivers and passing motorists to prevent serious accidents.

Compensation That May Be Available to Injury Victims

Even when injuries are described as “minor,” crashes involving semi-trucks can have lasting physical, emotional, and financial consequences—especially for older victims.

Depending on the facts of the case, injured motorists may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, follow-up treatment, rehabilitation, prescription costs, and any future care needs. Victims may also seek compensation for pain and suffering, emotional distress, lost income, and reduced quality of life. In cases involving commercial vehicles, additional liability may extend to trucking companies or third parties responsible for vehicle operation, maintenance, or safety compliance.
