Driver Dies After Hitting Disabled Vehicle on I-96 by I-94

Driver Dies After Hitting Disabled Vehicle on I-96 by I-94, following a chain-reaction crash in Metro Detroit that turned a dangerous roadside situation into a fatal tragedy. The incident highlights the risks drivers face when vehicles become disabled on busy highways and the importance of understanding legal rights after such accidents.

According to the Michigan State Police, the initial crash occurred shortly before 8:50 p.m. Sunday on eastbound Interstate 96 near Warren Avenue in Wayne County. Authorities reported that a 34-year-old man driving a Hyundai was merging from I-94 onto I-96 when his vehicle struck the side of a semi-truck. The impact caused the driver to lose control and crash into the left concrete wall, leaving his vehicle disabled and partially blocking the left lane of traffic.

In a remarkable act of quick thinking, a passerby stopped at the scene and safely removed two children, ages 4 and 8, from the disabled vehicle. However, the driver remained inside the car as the situation unfolded.

Second Crash Turns Incident Fatal

While the disabled vehicle remained in the roadway, a Dodge Ram traveling in the left lane approached the scene. Troopers say the driver of the Dodge Ram collided with the disabled Hyundai, lost control, and then struck the semi-truck that had come to a stop following the initial crash. The force of the second collision caused the Hyundai to spin and strike the vehicle of the Good Samaritan, who had stopped to help.

Emergency responders arrived quickly and transported the Hyundai driver to a nearby hospital. Despite medical efforts, he was later pronounced dead. Fortunately, no other individuals involved in the crash—including the children and the assisting motorist—were reported injured.

The severity of the crash led to the closure of all eastbound lanes of I-96 at I-94, along with nearby ramps. The Michigan Department of Transportation confirmed that the roadway remained closed for several hours before reopening shortly after midnight.

Compensation That May Be Available to Victims and Families

In complex, multi-vehicle crashes like this, victims and their families may be entitled to pursue compensation, depending on the investigation’s findings. Compensation can include medical expenses, emergency care, and any treatment provided before the victim’s passing. In fatal cases, surviving family members may file a wrongful death claim to recover damages such as funeral and burial costs, loss of financial support, and loss of companionship.

Additionally, if negligence played a role—such as failure to slow down, distracted driving, or failure to avoid a known hazard—liable parties may be held accountable. Insurance companies often attempt to limit payouts in multi-vehicle crashes, making it essential to investigate all contributing factors and sources of liability thoroughly.
