I-696 Crash in Oakland County Causes Fuel Spill and Lane Closures

I-696 Crash in Oakland County Causes Fuel Spill and has created major traffic disruptions as authorities respond to a serious Thursday night crash involving a semi-truck on Interstate 696.

Drivers on Interstate 696 in Oakland County should expect long delays after a crash involving a semi-truck caused a fuel spill. According to Michigan State Police, the crash happened on the westbound I-696 near Meredith. Police say the semi-truck driver went through a median wall, causing severe damage to the barrier and creating dangerous conditions for motorists traveling through the area.

Authorities say large portions of concrete now span both sides of the freeway, increasing the risk to other drivers and complicating cleanup and repairs.

According to the Michigan Department of Transportation, the ramps from northbound and southbound I-75 to eastbound I-696 have been closed until further notice. The westbound lanes of the freeway are also closed as crews work to manage the crash scene, address the fuel spill, and assess the damage.

At this time, the cause of the crash remains unknown. It is also unclear whether any injuries were reported. However, crashes involving commercial trucks and fuel spills often pose the risk of serious physical injuries, property damage, and lasting emotional stress for those involved.

Even when authorities have not yet confirmed the extent of the injuries, victims may still face significant consequences in the hours and days after the collision. Secondary crashes, exposure to hazardous materials, and damage caused by road debris can all make these incidents especially dangerous.

Compensation That May Be Available to Victims

When victims are hurt in a crash like this, the compensation at stake can be substantial, depending on the severity of the injuries and losses involved. Injured parties may be able to pursue compensation for:

  • Medical bills
  • Emergency treatment costs
  • Lost wages
  • Reduced earning capacity
  • Pain and suffering
  • Emotional distress
  • Property damage
  • Ongoing rehabilitation or future medical care

In truck accident cases, compensation may also reflect the broader impact the crash has had on a victim’s quality of life. What may initially seem like a manageable injury can become far more serious over time, particularly if the crash caused head trauma, back injuries, fractures, or soft tissue damage.
