Driver Charged After Double-Fatal Clinton Township Crash
Driver Charged After Double-Fatal Clinton Township Crash, after prosecutors announced multiple charges against a Sterling Heights man accused of fleeing police and causing a devastating collision that killed two young men in Macomb County. The tragic incident has drawn attention to the dangers of high-speed pursuits and the lasting consequences reckless driving can have on innocent victims and their families.
According to Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido, 54-year-old Keith Blackwell appeared Monday by video arraignment in 41-B District Court in Clinton Township. He is facing two counts of reckless driving causing death and two counts of first-degree fleeing a police officer. The charges stem from a crash that occurred around 2:30 a.m. on March 14.
Prosecutors allege that Clinton Township police initially observed Blackwell speeding southbound on Gratiot Avenue. When officers attempted a traffic stop using emergency lights and sirens, authorities say Blackwell failed to stop and instead continued driving at speeds exceeding 100 mph. Moments later, the 2002 Jeep Cherokee he was driving reportedly collided with a Volvo S60 traveling southbound on 14 Mile Road.
The crash claimed the lives of 23-year-old Richard Talley of Roseville and 24-year-old Joshua Jones of Southfield. Both men were occupants of the Volvo at the time of the collision. Authorities have not yet confirmed which of the two was driving. The Roseville Police Department is leading the investigation into the crash, while Blackwell remains hospitalized with injuries he sustained in the collision.
Serious Legal and Financial Consequences After a Fatal Crash
When a reckless driving incident results in the deaths of innocent victims, the legal consequences can be severe. But beyond the criminal case, families of those killed often face overwhelming emotional and financial burdens. Funeral and burial expenses, sudden loss of income, and the emotional devastation of losing a loved one can create lasting hardship.
Compensation That May Be Available to Victims’ Families
In cases like this, surviving family members may have the right to pursue compensation through a wrongful death claim. Damages may include funeral and burial costs, medical expenses incurred prior to death, and the loss of financial support the deceased would have provided. Families may also seek compensation for loss of companionship, emotional pain and suffering, and the long-term impact the tragedy has on their lives.
If reckless driving, fleeing police, or other forms of negligence are proven, victims’ families may have a stronger legal basis to pursue accountability and financial recovery. In some cases, claims may also involve insurance coverage disputes or additional liable parties. Because these cases can quickly become complex, experienced legal guidance is often essential to protecting the rights of those left behind.
