Detroit Motorist Convicted in Deadly 2023 Collision

Detroit Motorist Convicted in Deadly 2023 Collision after a jury found a Detroit driver guilty in connection with a wrong-way crash that claimed one life and left another person seriously injured. Court records filed Thursday confirm the verdict, bringing accountability in a case that highlights the severe consequences of intoxicated and reckless driving.

Details of the Charges and Verdict

The defendant, Damien Eldridge Thomas, was charged in 2024 with multiple felony counts, including operating while under the influence causing death, operating while under the influence causing serious injury, and reckless driving causing death. After deliberation, the jury found Thomas guilty on all charges. The verdict was officially recorded in filings with the Third Judicial Circuit Court in Detroit.

What Happened on Interstate 75

According to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, the fatal crash occurred around 2:30 a.m. on August 26, 2023, on Interstate 75 near Clark Street in Detroit. Michigan State Police troopers responded to a three-vehicle collision and discovered two 27-year-old men in separate vehicles who had been struck head-on.

One of the victims, Drasan Clanton of Hazel Park, Michigan, was pronounced dead at the scene. The second victim, a Detroit resident, survived but suffered serious injuries and was transported to a hospital for emergency medical care. Prosecutors stated that Thomas was driving northbound in the southbound lanes of I-75 while intoxicated when the collision occurred.

Investigation and Arrest

The crash was investigated by the Michigan State Police, with authorities carefully reconstructing the events leading up to the collision. Nearly a year after the incident, Thomas was arrested and formally charged. The delayed arrest reflects the complexity of fatal crash investigations, particularly when multiple vehicles and serious criminal charges are involved.

Compensation at Stake for Victims and Families

For injured victims and families who lose a loved one in a crash like this, Michigan law allows for several forms of compensation. These may include coverage for medical bills, ongoing rehabilitation, lost wages, and diminished future earning capacity. In fatal crash cases, families may also pursue wrongful death damages such as funeral and burial expenses, loss of financial support, loss of companionship, and emotional pain and suffering. When intoxicated driving is a factor, the financial and legal consequences for the at-fault driver can be significant.
