Family of Four Killed on I-75 [Oakland County]

An I-75 Oakland County fatal crash claimed the lives of four members of a Pontiac family after their vehicle, parked on the shoulder of southbound Interstate 75, was struck by another vehicle Wednesday night, July 1, 2026. The story was reported by CBS Detroit and confirmed by the Michigan State Police.

According to Michigan State Police, the crash occurred around 9:10 p.m. on southbound I-75 near Grange Hall Road (Exit 101). The family’s vehicle was parked on the right shoulder and was not blocking the roadway when it was struck by another vehicle. The victims have been identified as 24-year-old Tieree Powell and 24-year-old Zakiera Powell. The couple’s two young children, ages 4 and 2, also died in the crash. All southbound lanes of I-75 were closed at Grange Hall Road and remained closed until approximately 6:10 a.m. Thursday, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation. Michigan State Police crash reconstruction teams are working to determine what led to the collision. Investigators are examining whether intoxicants or road rage may have played a role. One person has been taken into custody, but Michigan State Police have not announced when the case will be presented to the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office for possible charges.

What Families in This Situation May Want to Know

When members of a family are killed after their vehicle is struck while parked on the shoulder of a freeway, investigators will work to determine exactly how the collision occurred and whether any criminal or traffic violations contributed to the crash. The findings of that investigation may also affect any civil claims that arise from the incident.

Under Michigan’s wrongful death statute, MCL 600.2922, the personal representative of each victim’s estate may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim on behalf of eligible surviving family members. Those claims may seek compensation for losses such as loss of companionship and society, grief and emotional distress, and funeral and burial expenses. Civil proceedings are separate from any criminal case and may move forward regardless of whether criminal charges are ultimately filed.

Michigan’s no-fault insurance system may provide certain benefits to eligible survivors, though the coverage available depends on the insurance policies involved and the specific circumstances of the crash. A personal injury attorney can help surviving family members identify applicable insurance coverage and evaluate what civil claims may be available as the investigation continues.
