71-Year-Old Killed in Oak Park Hit-and-Run
71-Year-Old Killed in Oak Park Hit-and-Run early Saturday morning, and investigators are now searching for the dark-colored sedan involved, according to a news release from Oak Park public safety officials. The tragic incident has prompted an intensive investigation as authorities work to identify the driver responsible.
Officers responded to West Nine Mile Road near Harding Street at approximately 5:20 a.m. When they arrived, they found the 71-year-old man lying in a grassy area near the roadway. First responders immediately attempted lifesaving measures, but despite their efforts, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials later confirmed that the man had been using a wheelchair at the time of the crash.
Investigators believe the collision occurred much earlier—around 1:30 a.m.—even though it was not reported until nearly four hours later. This time gap has created challenges in locating witnesses and preserving evidence. According to authorities, the victim was in the roadway when a dark-colored sedan struck him. Instead of stopping to help or report the crash, the driver continued driving, leaving the scene and turning the tragedy into a hit-and-run.
Based on early findings, investigators believe the vehicle involved is likely a Kia or Hyundai. The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office is now assisting Oak Park’s public safety team as the search intensifies. Officials are urging anyone who may have been near West Nine Mile and Greenfield roads, or West Nine Mile Road and Harding Street, between 1:00 a.m. and 2:00 a.m. on Saturday, to come forward if they saw a dark-colored sedan in the area.
For families affected by fatal hit-and-run crashes, the legal and financial impact can be overwhelming. When a loved one is killed due to someone else’s negligence or unlawful actions, there may be several types of compensation available.
These can include funeral and burial costs, loss of companionship, emotional suffering, and financial support that the victim would have provided to their family. In cases where the at-fault driver flees the scene, claims may also involve uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage. Pursuing these forms of compensation requires careful investigation, evidence gathering, and strong advocacy—especially when the driver has not yet been identified.
