Man Charged After Teen E-Bike Rider Killed in Hit-and-Run

Man Charged After Teen E-Bike Rider Killed in Hit-and-Run is now at the center of a Westmoreland County investigation, as authorities work to track down the driver accused of taking a young life and fleeing the scene. The incident occurred over the summer, when 19-year-old Jayden Lynch was struck and killed while riding his electric bike. Police have identified 37-year-old William Sever as the suspected driver and have issued multiple charges against him.

According to the Westmoreland County District Attorney’s Office, Sever was driving with a suspended license at the time of the crash—his suspension stemming from a prior DUI conviction. He now faces several serious charges, including accidents involving death and tampering with evidence. Investigators say these charges reflect not only the fatal collision but also Sever’s alleged efforts to hide his involvement.

Authorities stated that Lynch had been riding his e-bike along North Greengate Road near College Avenue in Hempfield Township when he was struck. Two passing drivers stopped to help, but they did not witness the crash itself and could only describe a vehicle fleeing toward Route 130. Despite the limited information, troopers soon discovered a critical piece of evidence: the suspect’s bumper had fallen off at the scene. The damaged bumper allowed investigators to determine the type of vehicle involved.

Using traffic cameras and automated license plate readers, investigators traced the vehicle to a residence in Jeannette. When officers executed a search warrant, they found both the vehicle’s owner and Sever hiding inside. The owner confirmed he had loaned the car to Sever on the night of the crash. Witness statements and cell phone data later placed Sever behind the wheel at the exact time Lynch was killed. Troopers also noted duct tape on the driver’s side mirror—an apparent attempt to conceal damage from the collision.
