A 13-year-old boy is in intensive care at Children’s Hospital in Detroit and his 15-year-old sister suffered serious injuries after a car struck the siblings as they rode an e-bike in Redford on Saturday night. The driver was cited at the scene and may face additional charges depending on the severity of the boy’s injuries. The story was reported by ClickOnDetroit Local 4 News on August 10, 2026.
According to the children’s mother, Raven Bryant, the crash occurred around 9:20 p.m. near Inkster Road and Clarita in Redford Township, Wayne County. The two siblings had ridden to a nearby 7-Eleven and were on their way home when they stopped near the intersection because cars were speeding in the area. Their 15-year-old sister, Romance Brooks, told her mother they were about to turn onto a side street to avoid the larger road when a vehicle struck them.
Kanaei Harris, 13, was transported to Children’s Hospital in Detroit, where he is in intensive care. His mother told Local 4 that he has swelling in the brain and a brain bleed and that he is not responsive to family members. Romance was also seriously injured in the crash. The driver remained at the scene and was cited. Authorities indicated that the driver may face additional charges depending on the severity of Kanaei’s injuries, and the investigation remains ongoing. The family is asking anyone who witnessed the crash or whose cameras may have captured it to come forward.
The crash has created additional medical concerns because Kanaei was already managing a serious health condition before the collision. He has polycystic kidney disease and undergoes dialysis three times per week. The crash damaged his dialysis port, requiring surgery to repair it before his dialysis treatment can continue. His medical team is working to develop a plan that addresses both the brain injury and his dialysis needs.
What the Family May Want to Know
When two children are seriously injured in a crash, their family may face important questions about insurance coverage, medical expenses, and potential claims against the responsible driver. Because evidence can disappear quickly, preserving witness information, photographs, surveillance footage, and other documentation from the crash may be important even while the investigation remains ongoing.
The driver’s citation is a starting point, but it does not by itself determine the full scope of civil liability. Under Michigan’s no-fault system, PIP benefits may be available for the children’s medical expenses through applicable insurance policies. Whether additional liability claims may be available for pain and suffering and other noneconomic losses depends on the nature and severity of the injuries and the specific circumstances of the crash.
Authorities indicated that the driver may face additional charges depending on the severity of the 13-year-old’s injuries, and the investigation remains ongoing. An auto accident attorney can help the family identify applicable insurance coverage, evaluate potential claims on behalf of both children, and understand how the ongoing investigation may affect their legal options.
