Two 13-Year-Olds Critically Injured After E-Moto Struck by Truck [BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, MI]

Two 13-year-old boys are in critical condition after the e-moto-type vehicle they were riding together was struck by a pickup truck at a crosswalk on Telegraph Road in Bloomfield Township on Monday, September 7, 2026.

According to Bloomfield Township police, the two boys, both Bloomfield Township residents, were traveling westbound on the safety path along Hickory Grove just before noon when they were struck by a Ford F-250 truck while riding through a crosswalk at southbound Telegraph Road. Police described the vehicle the boys were riding as an “e-moto-type vehicle.” Both were critically injured and transported to nearby hospitals by the Bloomfield Township Fire Department. The driver of the truck, a 35-year-old Rochester Hills man, remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under active investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the Bloomfield Township Police Department at 248-433-7755.

In response to the crash, a Michigan state lawmaker told ClickOnDetroit that the incident underscores the need for new legislation governing e-bikes and e-scooters on Michigan roads and pathways. The legislator noted concerns about e-bike-related crashes and called for additional safety measures.

What Those Involved May Want to Know

When two children are critically injured after being struck by a vehicle in a crosswalk, the legal questions facing their families involve both the specific circumstances of the crash and the classification of the vehicle the boys were riding.

Whether the truck driver’s conduct at the crosswalk gives rise to civil liability depends on facts the investigation is still establishing, including the signal state at the time, the movement of both vehicles, and other circumstances surrounding the collision. An auto accident attorney can evaluate those questions as the investigation develops.

The description of the boys’ vehicle as an “e-moto-type vehicle” may also be legally significant. Michigan law distinguishes electric bicycles that meet statutory requirements from motorcycles and other motor vehicles. The classification of the vehicle may affect the insurance and other legal issues arising from the crash. Determining how this particular vehicle is classified would require information about its design, power, speed capabilities, and other characteristics.

Because both injured riders are minors, special rules may affect the deadlines applicable to certain legal claims. However, different deadlines can apply to different types of claims and insurance benefits, making it important not to assume that every deadline is extended because an injured person is under 18. Preserving evidence early, including photographs, witness information, and the vehicle itself, may also be important as the investigation continues.
