Toddler Found Safe After 100 MPH Crash of Stolen Car

Toddler Found Safe After 100 MPH Crash of Stolen Car — that was the relief-filled headline many residents of Southeast Michigan woke up to after a dangerous police pursuit on Thursday night. A stolen vehicle, which still had a sleeping toddler in the back seat, led officers on a high-speed chase that spanned St. Clair and Macomb counties before crashing near the Sugarbush Tavern in Chesterfield.

According to the Port Huron Police Department and the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began around 9 p.m. when a male juvenile stole a vehicle from a gas station located at Pine Grove Avenue and Hancock Street in Port Huron. The child, asleep in the back seat, was unknowingly taken along for the ride.

Soon after the theft, a Marysville Police officer spotted the stolen vehicle traveling along Interstate 94 near Exit 266 and attempted a traffic stop. However, the juvenile driver refused to comply, instead initiating a high-speed pursuit that endangered the child, law enforcement officers, and the public. The St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office noted that speeds exceeded 100 mph during the chase.

The suspect maneuvered between exits, at one point leaving the highway onto 23 Mile Road before rejoining I-94. The pursuit finally came to an end when the driver lost control and crashed into several parked vehicles near the Sugarbush Tavern on 21 Mile Road in Chesterfield.

Miraculously, emergency medical teams determined the toddler was unharmed and did not require hospital treatment. The driver, identified as a juvenile with an extensive criminal history, was arrested at the scene and is currently being held at the Macomb Juvenile Detention Facility.

Multiple agencies collaborated in the response, including the Marysville Police Department, Macomb County Sheriff’s Office, Chesterfield Police Department, and Central Dispatch. In a public statement, Port Huron officials praised the teamwork that led to the safe recovery of the child. “When a child is involved, the situation becomes even more critical. We’re all grateful the toddler was found safe,” said St. Clair County Sheriff Mat King.
