Sterling Heights Man Charged in Fatal DUI Crash
Sterling Heights Man Charged in Fatal DUI Crash following a devastating three-vehicle collision that occurred on September 5 in Commerce Township, Oakland County, Michigan. Authorities say the crash has now led to felony charges after one driver lost his life as a result of the incident.
According to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, 51-year-old Kevin Joseph Koldys of Sterling Heights has been charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, causing death. Koldys was arraigned on Friday and given a $25,000 bond. He remains in the Oakland County Jail as the case moves forward through the court system. A probable cause conference has been scheduled for December 30, with a preliminary examination set for January 7.
The charge stems from a serious crash that occurred at the intersection of Pontiac Trail and Martin Parkway. Investigators say the collision involved three vehicles and resulted in fatal injuries to one of the drivers. The victim was identified as 30-year-old Matthew John Szakal of Waterford Township, who was driving a Chevrolet Trax at the time of the crash. Despite emergency response efforts, Szakal succumbed to his injuries.
Reports indicate that Koldys was driving a Lexus RC northbound on M-5 when he ran off the roadway, traveling several hundred feet through tall grass and weeds. Authorities allege that he then re-entered the roadway, jumped a curb at a roundabout, and struck the Chevrolet Trax. The impact forced the Chevrolet into a third vehicle, a Honda CR-V driven by a 64-year-old woman from Wixom. She sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene. Koldys reportedly suffered serious injuries in the crash.
Compensation at Stake for the Victim’s Family
In fatal DUI crashes like this, surviving family members may be entitled to pursue a wrongful death claim. Compensation can include funeral and burial expenses, medical costs incurred before death, loss of financial support, loss of companionship, emotional suffering, and the pain and distress experienced by surviving loved ones. In some cases, additional damages may be available when intoxicated driving is involved, as these incidents often demonstrate reckless disregard for the safety of others.
