Fatal Collision Disrupts Traffic on I-275 in Livonia
Fatal Collision Disrupts Traffic on I-275 in Livonia early Monday morning after a deadly single-vehicle crash forced the complete shutdown of southbound lanes, significantly impacting commuters throughout Wayne County. According to the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), the crash occurred near the Five Mile Road area, just south of Six Mile Road, prompting an extensive emergency response and prolonged cleanup.
The Livonia Police Department confirmed it is investigating the incident, which involved only one vehicle. Preliminary reports indicate that the driver was ejected from the vehicle during the crash, a factor that often points to either extreme force upon impact or the possible lack of seatbelt use. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the victim, pending notification of next of kin.
As emergency crews worked the scene, all southbound lanes of I-275 were closed near Six Mile Road. MDOT also shut down entrance ramps from both Six Mile Road and Seven Mile Road to southbound I-275 to ensure responder safety and allow investigators to document evidence. The closure extended through much of the morning commute, causing significant delays for drivers traveling through the Livonia area.
To manage traffic congestion, MDOT advised motorists to use Six Mile Road to Farmington Road southbound, then continue westbound on I-96 as an alternate route. Despite these efforts, congestion persisted for several hours as crews cleared debris, removed the damaged vehicle, and ensured the roadway was safe for reopening.
Compensation That May Be Available to Victims’ Families
In fatal crash cases like this, surviving family members may be entitled to pursue compensation through a wrongful death claim. Depending on the circumstances of the collision, recoverable damages may include funeral and burial expenses, loss of the deceased’s financial support, loss of companionship, and emotional suffering endured by surviving loved ones. In some cases, additional compensation may be available through no-fault insurance benefits, uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage, or third-party liability claims if roadway conditions, vehicle defects, or other contributing factors played a role.
Understanding what compensation applies can be complex, particularly during an emotionally overwhelming time. That is why families must have knowledgeable legal guidance to protect their rights and ensure no available benefits are overlooked.
