Oakland County Road Worker Killed in Work Zone Crash

An Oakland County road worker killed in work zone crash has left a community in mourning and raised urgent concerns about construction zone safety. The tragic incident occurred around 11:11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 23, on Orchard Lake Road in Farmington Hills, between 10 Mile and 11 Mile roads.

According to Farmington Hills Police Chief John Piggott, a vehicle traveling southbound on Orchard Lake Road crossed over the center median and slammed into a group of three road workers who were performing sewer repair work on the northbound side. The road crew had followed all safety protocols, including the use of proper signage and adhering to legal parking regulations, when the driver veered into their work zone.

Sadly, one worker, later identified as 43-year-old Cedric Jones, was pronounced dead at the scene. The two other workers sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the hospital for urgent care. The driver of the vehicle was also hospitalized, but details about their condition have not been released.

Jones’ family described him as a devoted husband, father, and a man of strong faith. In a heartfelt statement, they shared how Cedric’s smile lit up every room and how his gentle spirit brought peace to those around him. “His passing is something we just cannot fathom,” the family said. “We ask for continued prayers as we try to make sense of this unimaginable loss.”

Loved ones, like Tracie Love, expressed their heartbreak and called on drivers to be more aware of construction zones. “Take your time. Watch out for the construction workers. Life is too precious,” she said. “A loved one is lost—not coming home to their family, to their children.”

Authorities are still investigating to determine the cause of the crash. Both directions of Orchard Lake Road remained closed as investigators examined the scene. The Farmington Hills Police Department urges anyone with information to contact their Command Desk at 248-871-2610.
