A high-speed collision involving three vehicles left multiple people injured Wednesday afternoon at the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Jonathon Street in Dearborn. Dearborn police responded to the scene as passengers were transported to area hospitals, with at least one person reported in critical condition.
Details of the Incident
According to Dearborn police, a Ford Explorer was attempting a left turn from Jonathon Street onto Michigan Avenue when a black Range Rover traveling at high speed slammed into it. A witness at the scene told CBS News Detroit that the impact sent car parts flying across the intersection. Security footage from a nearby business captured the moment of impact, showing the black vehicle accelerating rather than slowing before striking the Explorer and swiping an additional vehicle in the process. Three cars in total were involved in the collision.
Emergency Response
Emergency crews arrived at the scene and transported multiple passengers to area hospitals for treatment. Dearborn police confirmed that one passenger is in critical condition, though authorities stated that no one is facing a life-threatening injury at this time. The crash remains under active investigation by the Dearborn Police Department, and it is not yet known whether charges will be filed against any driver.
What Victims Should Know About Their Legal Rights
When a driver is traveling at excessive speed and causes a multi-vehicle collision, Michigan law may hold them liable for the injuries of everyone affected. Victims of crashes like this one — whether they were in the vehicle that was struck, a passenger in any of the cars involved, or a bystander — may have the right to pursue compensation through a personal injury claim.
Michigan’s no-fault insurance system ensures that your own insurance policy covers initial medical expenses and lost wages regardless of fault. However, for injuries that rise to the level of a “serious impairment of body function,” Michigan law also allows victims to pursue a third-party claim directly against the at-fault driver for pain, suffering, and other damages that no-fault does not cover. Given that at least one person in this crash was reported in critical condition, the injuries involved may well meet that threshold.
Multi-vehicle crashes also complicate the question of fault and insurance coverage. When three or more vehicles are involved, insurers for each party may dispute liability, delay claims, or attempt to shift blame to minimize what they pay out. Having an experienced personal injury attorney handle those communications from the start can make a significant difference in the outcome of your case.
Time also matters. Evidence from crashes — including surveillance footage like the video captured at this scene — can be lost or overwritten quickly. Witness accounts become harder to obtain as days pass. The sooner you seek legal counsel after an accident, the better positioned you will be to protect your rights and build a strong claim.
