Amish Woman Injured in Gladwin County Collision
An Amish woman injured in a Gladwin County collision was hospitalized Tuesday morning following a crash involving a horse-drawn buggy and a semi-truck in Beaverton Township, Michigan. According to the Gladwin County Sheriff’s Office, the accident happened around 7:40 a.m. on Beaverton Road, just west of South Bard Road.
Authorities report that a 61-year-old Amish woman and a 17-year-old Amish boy were traveling eastbound on Beaverton Road while towing an unoccupied buggy. A semi-truck, also heading eastbound, struck their buggy. The woman sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Fortunately, the teenage passenger and the truck driver, a 45-year-old man from Hersey, Michigan, escaped without injury. Beaverton Fire and Rescue, along with MyMichigan Ambulance Service, responded quickly to provide medical assistance and secure the scene.
This accident marks the second Amish buggy-related crash in Gladwin County this month. On August 1, tragedy struck when a 58-year-old Amish woman was killed and two others were injured after a Jeep collided with their buggy. These incidents highlight the ongoing risks Amish families face while traveling rural roads in traditional buggies, particularly when sharing space with larger, faster-moving vehicles such as trucks.
Collisions involving Amish buggies are hazardous due to the lack of protection these traditional carriages provide. Unlike modern vehicles equipped with safety features such as airbags and reinforced frames, buggies leave passengers exposed, making even minor impacts potentially serious. This vulnerability underscores the importance of awareness and caution for drivers who share the road with horse-drawn transportation.
Compensation Available to Victims
When an accident like this occurs, injured victims and their families may be entitled to compensation under Michigan law. Compensation can include coverage for medical expenses, rehabilitation costs, lost wages due to inability to work, and damages for pain and suffering. In more severe cases involving fatalities, families may pursue wrongful death claims to recover funeral expenses and financial support lost as a result of the crash.
Navigating the legal system after a buggy collision can be overwhelming, especially for families already facing medical and emotional challenges. Insurance companies may attempt to minimize payouts or deny claims altogether, leaving victims without the necessary resources to recover fully. That is why having experienced legal support makes a critical difference.
