2-Year-Old Girl Fatally Struck by Vehicle in Detroit
A 2-year-old girl fatally struck by a vehicle in Detroit has died from her injuries after what police are calling a heartbreaking family accident. The incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of Victoria Avenue and McDougall Street, in a quiet residential area on Detroit’s east side.
According to Detroit Police Captain Derrick Griffin, the young child was initially being held by an older sibling when she suddenly got down and ran into the street. At that exact moment, her father—unaware that she had run off—was beginning to drive the family vehicle.
Tragically, the girl was struck by the car. First responders arrived swiftly and transported her to the Children’s Hospital of Michigan, where she was initially listed in critical condition. Despite the efforts of medical staff, she sadly succumbed to her injuries.
Police, fire, and EMS units responded immediately to the scene. The Detroit Police Department’s Fatal Squad Unit is now conducting a thorough investigation to understand the full circumstances of the incident. At this time, authorities believe the tragedy was purely accidental and not the result of negligence or wrongdoing.
Captain Griffin expressed deep sympathy for the family and community affected by the devastating loss. “Our hearts and condolences go out to this family and this community,” he said.
While no criminal charges are currently being considered, this heartbreaking incident underscores the importance of safety awareness, especially when young children are present near vehicles. These kinds of accidents are, unfortunately, more common than many realize, and unexpected financial burdens often accompany the emotional toll on families.
In cases like this, families may be entitled to certain types of compensation, even if the accident involved a family member and was ruled unintentional.
