Warren Driver Faces Charges After Deadly Hit-and-Run on I-696

Warren Driver Faces Charges After Deadly Hit-and-Run on I-696, a tragic incident that claimed the life of a young woman who was simply trying to fuel her car on the side of the road. Prosecutors say Meghan Hamilton, 36, of Warren, struck 28-year-old Nateria Smith of Madison Heights in the early hours of Sunday morning and failed to remain at the scene.

The Fatal Crash

According to Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido, the crash occurred around 1:15 a.m. on eastbound Interstate 696 near Hoover Road/Exit 24. Smith had parked her car on the shoulder after running out of gas and was attempting to refill her tank when Hamilton’s vehicle struck her. Despite the severe impact, Hamilton did not stop to render aid or call for emergency assistance.

Witnesses at the scene provided authorities with a description of the vehicle involved, as well as details from the debris left behind. Warren Police later located Hamilton’s parked car, which showed damage consistent with the crash.

Charges Against Hamilton

Hamilton has been charged with failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting in serious impairment or death, a felony offense punishable by up to five years in prison. She was arraigned on Wednesday and given a $50,000 bond, with conditions including a GPS tether should she be released. A probable cause conference is scheduled for August 21, with a preliminary examination set for August 28.

Prosecutor Lucido stressed the seriousness of fleeing the scene of an accident, stating, “Remaining at the scene of a collision is not only required by law, but also a fundamental responsibility that ensures help can arrive quickly and that the facts can be fully understood.”

The Devastating Loss

Smith was transported to a nearby hospital following the crash but was tragically pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Her death is a painful reminder of the dangers that roadside emergencies pose, particularly when drivers fail to remain vigilant or respect the safety of others.

Compensation at Stake for the Victim’s Family

When a fatal hit-and-run occurs, the victim’s family is left not only with grief but also significant financial burdens. In cases like this, compensation may cover funeral and burial expenses, medical costs incurred before death, loss of future income, and non-economic damages such as pain and suffering. Surviving family members may also pursue wrongful death claims to hold negligent drivers accountable and to secure the financial support they need during such a difficult time.
