Truck Crash Delays Traffic at I-94/I-96 Interchange
Detroit commuters faced major delays early Wednesday after a semi-truck accident at the busy I-94 and I-96 interchange in Wayne County. The crash, which occurred around 2:18 a.m., caused lane closures and traffic backups that stretched well into the morning rush hour.
According to the Michigan Department of Transportation’s MI Drive map, the ramp from westbound I-94 to eastbound I-96/Exit 213 was completely shut down following the crash. State police confirmed that the truck was finally moved just after 7:30 a.m., allowing traffic to resume slowly. The freeway ramp was fully reopened by 10:44 a.m., but the impact on morning commuters was already widespread.
Authorities reported that the driver, a 26-year-old man from East Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, lost control while exiting I-94. Investigators believe he was traveling at an unsafe speed, which caused the contents of his trailer to shift and the trailer to overturn.
As tow operators worked to upright the semi, one side of the trailer collapsed, spilling nearly 40,000 pounds of cargo onto the freeway. Crews were forced to spend hours manually reloading the merchandise, further extending the delays.
Michigan State Police emphasized the dangers of reckless driving, noting how one driver’s risky behavior caused a chain reaction that disrupted thousands of commuters. “While no one was hurt and no other vehicles were involved, we will see the effects of this crash on travel for hours,” said First Lt. Mike Shaw.
Compensation at Stake for Victims of Truck Accidents
While this particular incident did not result in injuries, truck crashes often have devastating consequences for those involved. Victims of truck accidents may be entitled to several forms of compensation, including coverage for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, emotional distress, and property damage. In more serious cases, long-term rehabilitation and loss of future earning capacity can also be part of a compensation claim. Even in crashes where only traffic is disrupted, those directly affected may face financial losses from missed work or damage to their vehicles.
