Teen Could Face Adult Charges in Crash That Killed Dad of Two
A tragic crash that claimed the life of a young father is now leading Macomb County prosecutors to consider adult charges against the 16-year-old involved. The teen could face adult charges in the crash that killed dad of two, 28-year-old Alex Habib of Madison Heights, early Saturday morning. Authorities say the teen was fleeing police in a stolen vehicle when he crashed into Habib, who was working as an Uber driver at the time.
According to Roseville police, the events unfolded around 2:40 a.m. on July 12, 2025. Officers attempted to stop a black Hyundai Sonata near I-94 and Gratiot Avenue, believing the vehicle had just been stolen from a nearby neighborhood. The driver, identified as a 16-year-old juvenile, refused to stop. A high-speed chase ensued, leading police onto westbound I-696, then onto Hoover Road, and finally to 11 Mile Road.
At the intersection of 11 Mile Road and Van Dyke Avenue, the teen allegedly ran a red light and slammed into a Ford Fusion being driven by Habib. The crash was violent and left both vehicles heavily damaged. Emergency responders arrived quickly and began providing aid to both drivers before transporting them to a nearby hospital. Tragically, Habib succumbed to his injuries.
Habib leaves behind a grieving wife, a 1-year-old daughter, and a 3-month-old son. The young family is now facing unimaginable emotional and financial hardship due to the sudden and wrongful death of their loved one. A preliminary hearing for the teen suspect was scheduled in Macomb County Juvenile Court on Monday, July 14.
The Warren Police Department’s Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit is conducting a thorough investigation into the fatal collision. Meanwhile, the Roseville Police Department has launched an internal review of the pursuit to determine whether procedures were followed correctly during the chase.
As this heartbreaking situation unfolds, it’s essential to understand the type of compensation that may be available for families like the Habibs. In wrongful death cases involving reckless driving or police pursuits, surviving family members may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, funeral costs, loss of future income, loss of companionship, and emotional suffering. These damages are intended to help support the surviving spouse and children, especially when the victim was the primary breadwinner.
