A 68-year-old Detroit woman is recovering from serious injuries after being viciously attacked by pit bulls outside her own home on Sunday evening, March 29, 2026. The attack occurred near Pulford and Meldrum streets on Detroit’s east side, leaving the victim, Rita Emery, in need of emergency hospitalization and a surgical procedure that lasted more than seven hours.
Rita Emery had been outside tending to her yard when the dogs knocked her to the ground and attacked her. Her son, Sean Emery, described the scene as one of the most disturbing he had ever witnessed. Rita lost approximately two pints of blood before emergency responders transported her to the hospital. The blood stains remained visible on the concrete and surrounding area after the attack.
A passing Good Samaritan heard Rita’s cries from a block away, on Mack Avenue, and rode his bicycle to the scene in an attempt to help her. Rita managed to crawl back to the house where her son was inside. She was subsequently transported to a hospital where surgeons performed an extensive operation to treat her injuries. As of the time of reporting, she was recovering from the procedure. Sean Emery expressed deep gratitude for the neighbor who responded, calling him his mother’s guardian angel. The family has appealed to the community for financial help to cover mounting medical costs.
Understanding the Legal Implications of This Dog Attack
Michigan law places significant responsibility on dog owners when their animals cause injury to another person. Under Michigan’s dog bite statute, an owner can be held liable for injuries caused by their dog in a public place or on private property, including in situations where the victim was lawfully on the premises. Importantly, Michigan does not require a dog to have a prior history of aggression — owners can be held strictly liable even for a first-time attack. If you or a loved one has been injured in a dog bite incident, understanding this law is a critical first step.
In a case like this one, where the victim suffered catastrophic injuries requiring emergency surgery, the potential damages are substantial. Compensation in dog bite claims can include medical expenses — both immediate and long-term — lost income during recovery, physical pain and suffering, emotional trauma, and costs related to ongoing rehabilitation. Given the severity of Rita Emery’s injuries and the length of her surgery, her medical bills alone could be overwhelming for the family without legal intervention.
Dog owners in Michigan are also required to keep their animals reasonably confined, and failures to do so — such as allowing dogs to roam off a property and attack a neighbor — can constitute negligence beyond strict liability. If the dogs that attacked Rita Emery were known to be dangerous or had a history of aggression, that may further strengthen the grounds for a civil claim against the owner. Victims of dog attacks should document all medical treatment, photograph injuries, and speak with an attorney as soon as possible to preserve their legal options.
