Man Killed in I-275 Crash in Wayne County

A tragic accident on southbound I-275 in Wayne County claimed the life of a man late Monday evening. The southbound lanes were closed for several hours following the fatal crash but reopened just before midnight, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation.

Michigan State Police (MSP) reported that the crash occurred around 7:55 p.m. near Ford Road in Canton Township. Preliminary investigations revealed that the man had pulled his vehicle over to the right shoulder before walking into the active lanes of traffic. One motorist managed to swerve and avoid hitting him, but a second driver was unable to stop in time and struck the man in the middle lane.

Authorities confirmed that both drivers involved remained at the scene and fully cooperated with investigators. Emergency responders pronounced the victim dead at the scene. His identity has not yet been released as officials work to notify his next of kin.

Traffic along the busy stretch of I-275 was diverted for several hours as police conducted their investigation and cleared the scene. The freeway reopened shortly before midnight, restoring the flow of vehicles that had been backed up for miles.

Understanding Compensation After Fatal Crashes

When a fatal accident like this occurs, families are often left facing devastating emotional and financial burdens. In Michigan, surviving family members may be entitled to various forms of compensation through a wrongful death claim. This can include recovery for funeral and burial expenses, loss of companionship, pain and suffering experienced by the deceased before death, and loss of future financial support.

Additionally, insurance companies may be responsible for certain benefits under Michigan’s no-fault insurance laws, including survivor’s loss benefits and payment of medical or funeral costs. However, navigating the complexities of insurance coverage and legal claims after such a tragedy can be overwhelming—especially for families still processing their grief.
