Man accused of striking Dearborn man with SUV faces trial
A man accused of striking a Dearborn man with an SUV faces trial following a court appearance that revealed new developments in the ongoing case. The suspect, identified as Murtadha Alizairij, appeared alongside his defense attorney as prosecutors sought to strengthen the charges against him.
During the Wednesday court session, prosecutors requested an additional charge of reckless driving causing serious bodily impairment, to be added to the already serious count of assault with intent to murder. The case has been officially bound over for trial, with the next hearing scheduled for October 29.
The victim, Haidar Alfadawi, remains in a medically induced coma, as confirmed by his family’s attorney, Amir Makled. Alfadawi’s condition continues to be critical, with doctors warning that his prognosis may not allow for a full recovery. “His prognosis is not a good quality of life,” Makled said. “He’s still struggling with his injuries to this day, and his family remains by his bedside. His mother continues to pray for a miracle.”
The devastating incident occurred in August 2025, near the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Howe Street. Surveillance footage captured the moment of impact, showing Alfadawi being struck by an SUV in what appeared to be a violent and sudden collision. Multiple witnesses later testified, providing accounts that supported the prosecution’s version of events.
Among those who testified was a Dearborn police dispatcher who said she spoke with Alizairij for about 20 minutes after he called 911 to report the incident. According to testimony, Alizairij admitted to striking someone with his wife’s vehicle and identified himself during the call. He allegedly stated that he was texting while driving and accidentally veered into the wrong lane moments before the crash.
The defense, however, has not commented on the newly added charge. Prosecutors maintain that the evidence, particularly the surveillance video, speaks volumes about the severity and recklessness of the act. “The video speaks for itself,” said Makled. “We’re hoping for justice for Haidar and praying for his recovery.”
