Macomb County head-on crash killed a 3-year-old and Injures a 2-year-old
Macomb head-on crash kills a 3-year-old and injures a 2-year-old after a tragic collision in Bruce Township on Thursday evening, prompting a full investigation by Michigan State Police.
The heartbreaking incident occurred around 5:20 p.m. on M-53 near Ebeling Road, where dispatchers received multiple emergency calls reporting a severe two-vehicle crash.
When troopers arrived, they found two heavily damaged vehicles: a 2011 Chevy Impala driven by a father traveling with his 3-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son, and a 2023 Chevy Impala driven by an 18-year-old woman from Davison.
According to preliminary findings, the father was heading southbound on M-53 when his vehicle unexpectedly crossed into the northbound lanes and collided head-on with the other car.
Tragically, the 3-year-old girl was pronounced deceased at the scene. Her 2-year-old brother was transported to a nearby hospital with critical, life-threatening injuries. Both the father and the 18-year-old driver were also taken to the hospital for treatment of severe injuries.
Michigan State Police noted that the younger child was not properly restrained and that only one car seat was found inside the vehicle, raising significant concerns about safety compliance.
Investigators also learned that the 18-year-old woman had been driving behind her boyfriend just before the crash. He swerved to avoid the oncoming vehicle, but she had no chance to escape the impact. Police say there was no evidence of braking by the at-fault driver before the collision, though the reason he crossed the center line remains unclear. A blood draw was completed as part of the standard investigative process.
Lt. Mike Shaw of MSP emphasized the preventable nature of many collisions and the importance of proper seatbelt and child restraint use, particularly during busy holiday travel periods. Authorities will continue gathering evidence, reviewing vehicle data, and speaking with witnesses to determine the exact cause of the crash.
Compensation Options for Families Affected by This Crash
Families impacted by a crash of this magnitude may be entitled to several types of compensation under Michigan law. This may include coverage for medical expenses, ongoing rehabilitation, lost income, emotional suffering, and long-term care needs.
In cases involving the wrongful death of a child, families may also seek compensation for funeral costs, loss of companionship, and other damages that recognize the profound emotional toll of such a tragic loss. These claims can be complex, especially when multiple injured parties and investigative factors are involved.
