A 42-year-old Rochester Hills man riding an electric motorcycle was seriously injured Tuesday morning, September 15, 2026, after a collision with a pickup truck at West Avon Road and Old Perch Road in Rochester Hills, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.
The crash occurred shortly before 7:30 a.m. as the rider was traveling on the sidewalk and attempted to cross West Avon Road. Investigators said another vehicle was stopped in a position that blocked the crosswalk, causing the rider to travel outside the crosswalk. He then collided with a Ford Ranger pickup truck. Witnesses told investigators that the pickup entered the intersection against a red traffic signal.
The rider, who was not wearing a helmet, suffered serious injuries and was listed in stable condition. The pickup driver and a passenger were not injured. The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit is investigating the collision.
What Those Involved May Want to Know
When a rider of an electric motorcycle is seriously injured in a collision with another vehicle, the legal and insurance questions can depend on both the circumstances of the crash and how the electric vehicle is classified under Michigan law.
The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office said the electric motorcycle involved in this crash was not registered and was not legally permitted to operate on either the sidewalk or roadway. Michigan law distinguishes qualifying electric bicycles from motorcycles and other motor vehicles under MCL 257.13b, and those classifications can affect registration, licensing, insurance, and operating requirements.
Insurance issues involving an electric motorcycle can also be more complicated than those involving a conventional passenger vehicle. An auto accident attorney can evaluate the vehicle’s classification, the insurance policies involved, and what coverage may be available to an injured rider.
Whether the pickup truck driver may bear civil liability will depend on the evidence gathered during the investigation. Witnesses reportedly told investigators that the Ford Ranger entered the intersection against a red traffic signal. Investigators will also evaluate the movements of both vehicles and other circumstances surrounding the collision before determining what occurred.
