Deadly Collision on I-96 in Novi Leaves Two Dead

A deadly collision on I-96 in Novi leaves two dead after a fiery crash that shut down the highway for several hours in Oakland County. The tragic accident occurred early Tuesday morning and has left the community in shock as investigators continue to piece together the details.

According to the Novi Police Department, the crash involved two drivers who both lost their lives at the scene. Authorities reported that Neena Wang, 30, of California, had pulled her Acura to the shoulder of the road around 2:15 a.m., likely due to a tire issue or mechanical problem. Moments later, Sylvette Campbell, 57, of Westland, driving a Kia Sol, collided with the disabled vehicle. The impact caused both cars to erupt into flames, trapping both drivers inside. Despite emergency response efforts, neither driver was able to escape, and they were pronounced dead on site.

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) confirmed that all eastbound lanes of I-96 were closed from Beck Road / Exit 160 to Novi Road / Exit 162 while crews responded to the wreckage. Traffic remained backed up until the highway reopened shortly before 9 a.m. The morning commute was further complicated by dense fog advisories issued by the National Weather Service, with visibility reduced to just a quarter mile in some areas of Southeast Michigan. Officials warned drivers to slow down and increase following distances, highlighting how poor conditions can increase risks on already dangerous highways.

This devastating crash underscores the unpredictable dangers drivers face on Michigan roadways. Mechanical breakdowns, combined with visibility challenges and split-second reaction times, can quickly lead to catastrophic outcomes. Sadly, in this case, two families are now left grieving their loved ones after what began as an ordinary drive.

Legal Considerations and Compensation for Victims’ Families

When fatal accidents occur, questions often arise about what legal options are available to the surviving families. In situations like this, wrongful death claims may be pursued to help cover funeral expenses, loss of income, and the emotional suffering caused by a preventable tragedy. Liability can become complex in multi-vehicle collisions, particularly when mechanical issues, road conditions, and weather factors are involved.

At Mihelich & Kavanaugh, PLC, we understand how overwhelming these circumstances can be. Our team works closely with families to investigate every detail of a crash, ensuring that negligent parties are held accountable. From reviewing accident reports to consulting with accident reconstruction experts, we take the necessary steps to secure justice and fair compensation. No financial settlement can bring back a loved one, but it can ease the financial burden and provide a measure of stability during such a difficult time.

Moving Forward Safely

This tragedy serves as a reminder for all Michigan drivers to exercise caution when road conditions are less than ideal. Pulling over onto the shoulder can be dangerous, especially on fast-moving interstates like I-96. Whenever possible, drivers should use hazard lights, move to the farthest shoulder, and call for assistance immediately. Likewise, drivers approaching disabled vehicles should reduce speed and move over whenever possible, as required under Michigan’s “Move Over” law.
