1 Killed in I-96 Crash Involving Semi and Pickup Truck
A tragic collision on Monday afternoon left one person dead after a pickup truck collided with a semi-truck on westbound I-96 in Howell Township, Michigan. According to the Michigan State Police, the fatal crash occurred around 1:44 p.m. near Mason Road in Livingston County, causing traffic delays and prompting a full closure of the highway for several hours.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the semi-truck driver, a 39-year-old man, was heading westbound on I-96 when he slowed to a stop due to heavy congestion ahead. Unfortunately, a 49-year-old Fowlerville man driving a Dodge Ram failed to stop in time and slammed into the rear of the stationary trailer. The impact was severe, and despite emergency response efforts, the driver of the pickup truck was pronounced dead at the scene.
A passenger inside the semi-truck’s cab was thrown from the bunk area during the collision and suffered minor injuries, while the truck driver escaped unharmed. Authorities have stated that alcohol and drugs were not contributing factors, and the investigation into the exact cause of the crash remains ongoing. Once the scene was cleared and debris removed, westbound I-96 was reopened to normal traffic flow.
Compensation and Legal Options for the Victim’s Family
In devastating accidents like this, the family of the deceased may be entitled to compensation through a wrongful death claim. This type of compensation can help cover funeral and burial expenses, lost income, loss of companionship, and emotional suffering. In cases involving commercial vehicles such as semi-trucks, multiple parties may share liability—including the truck driver, the trucking company, or even maintenance contractors if negligence or improper safety practices are discovered.
